Before arranging accommodation and transport (both to and around Christchurch), deciding how many people are going will be required to work out the best options for accommodation and transport. The minimum number is 4 players and an adult, but taking a reserve is permitted (and they are able to substituted in and out on the lowest board during the event), and other adults may well wish to accompany the team as well e.g. parents, grandparents etc. If budget allows, travelling the day before the tournament helps avoid issues with flight delays/cancellations and avoids stress and an early morning which can impact the team performance. There is plenty of time to travel home on October 1st as the prizegiving will be starting around 12:30pm.
For budget-conscious teams, sending a 4 person team with 1 adult will keep costs down - a 2 bedroom motel unit (or holiday home) and a smaller rental car will be fine as long as luggage is minimised. For larger groups, a larger holiday home or a mix of motel units are reasonable options, or holiday parks or backpackers.
Accommodation in walking distance of the venue is mostly limited to a small number of holiday homes (see below for some suggested links) and one motel, so transport options will be important. The primary transport options are to rent a vehicle or use taxis or public transport (bus).
Our sponsor, Orange Car Rentals, offers a wide range of very reasonably priced rentals which are good quality, yet cheaper than taxis and far more convenient than buses as rental cars can be arranged to pick up from and drop off at Christchurch Airport so avoiding the cost of a taxi or other transport to and from the airport. Orange Car Rentals are pleased to offer a 10% discount on vehicle hires (NB does not include insurance) for the National Finals - please use the booking code 'chess' either on their website or call them on 0800 967 264. We very much welcome and appreciate Orange Car Rentals's sponsorship, and hope teams will support them. Options run from smaller cars up to people movers and minibuses, so all bases are covered.
The bus route past the venue is Route 100 - timetable and further information is available at Metroinfo.co.nz. Take the Palms to Halswell direction to get to the venue, and Halswell to the Palms direction to return. Cost is $4 for adults and $2 for children (U-18) per trip. If relying on this bus, the best place to book accommodation is along or near Riccarton Road near Westfield Riccarton (formerly Riccarton Mall) - there is a map of the route at the link which will assist with this.
Likely to be expensive ($40 - $50 per trip depending on exact location and numbers of people - note that 5+ passengers will cost more than standard fares), but certainly more convenient than the bus. We recommend First Direct because they do not charge fees for EFTPOS or credit cards, take Taxi Charge cards, can be booked online and offer a fare finder to give an idea of how much fares will cost. We do not recommend shuttles as although they are cheaper for individuals, they are generally more expensive than taxis for groups of 3+.
As noted above, decisions on transport will influence accommodation choices and vice versa. Relying on public transport is perfectly viable, but as noted above, realistically limits accommodation to part of Riccarton. There are clusters of motels in Addington, particularly along Lincoln Road, and in Riccarton, particularly along Riccarton Road and Blenheim Road - these are generally the closest motels to the venue (see below for a selection). Holiday parks and backpackers offer cheaper group accommodation but are spread further round the city (see below for a selection).
The only options in walking distance are holiday homes, but Christchurch has a wide variety all across the city. Holiday homes are a very good option for groups as they are typically cheaper per person than motels, and offer similar or better amenities. Recommended suburbs are Riccarton, Upper Riccarton, Addington, Spreydon, Somerfield, Hoon Hay and Halswell. Major websites offering these are Bookabach and Holidayhouses.co.nz.
