Welcome to the 2016 South Island Championships (incorporating the 2016 All Canterbury Championships)! This is one of a number of events celebrating 150 years of the Canterbury Chess Club and will be a Class 1 event in the Poison Pawn Grand Prix, to be held from 19/07/2016 - 23/07/2016. Vega files have the pairings and standings. Games can be viewed or downloaded at www.ChessChecker.com. Individual games can be viewed by clicking on the green triangles next to pairings/results, and the PGN can be downloaded by clicking Tournament Details and the file becomes available in the dropdown area.

The venue is the spectacular Newbery Lodge, 15 Newbery Street, Opawa, Christchurch. Plenty of off-street parking is available.

Tournament Information
The tournament is a FIDE and NZCF-rated event and is an 9 round Swiss, paired with the assistance of Vega. Time control is 90 minutes per player, per game, with a 30 second increment from move 1.

Tournament Timetable
Players' meeting will be at 9:00am on the 19th. Rounds will be at 9:30am and 3pm each day, except that as round 9 is the final round, there will be no afternoon round on the 23rd. Prizegiving will be held at the celebratory dinner, which will be held at the Lone Star Riccarton (corner Waimairi and Riccarton Roads in the carpark of the Bush Inn Centre), 7pm on Saturday 23 July. We have booked their function room, so need to confirm numbers promptly. Players and their familes are welcome and encouraged to attend - please email Craig Hall at canterbury@chess.org.nz if you intend to attend. First - $400 + 2 bottles of wine
Second - $250 + 2 bottles of wine
Third - $200 + 1 bottle of wine
Fourth - $150 + 1 bottle of wine

All Canterbury Champion - $150 + 1 bottle of wine

First U2100 - $120 + 1 bottle of wine
Second U2100 - bottle of wine

First U1800 - $120 + bottle of wine
Second U1800 - bottle of wine

Meritorious Performances - bottle of wine, one prize per day

DD Smash Upset prize - Book prize

Prizes will be shared between players on the same number of points - tie-breaks will not be used. Players may not win more than one open or grade prize, but may win the All Canterbury Championship prize, the DD Smash Upset prize and a meritorious performance prize in addition to other prizes.

Wine prizes will be replaced with book prizes for players under 18.

Final prizes will be awarded at the prizegiving dinner on Saturday night. Meritorious performance prizes will be awarded prior to the start of the rounds. Wine may not be opened in the venue as Newbery Lodge is not licensed for BYO.

The highest-placed South Island NZ player (NZ resident or citizen registered with a South Island club) will be the South Island Champion and the highest-placed Canterbury resident will be the All Canterbury Champion. NZ Master points are on offer - 10 points for 1st, 6 for 2nd, 3 for 3rd and 1 for 4th.

South Island Championship Competition Rules

To Enter
The entry fee is $110 ($130 for entries received after June 30) for this tournament or $180 to enter the South Island Championship, Rapid Championship and Lightning Championship. Please email the tournament organiser, Craig Hall. Please include your name, date of birth, NZCF ID, FIDE ID and a list of tournaments you would like to enter in the email, and a reply will be sent with our bank account number.

No buses go directly past the venue, but the Orbiter and routes 28 and 145 go reasonably close - about 10-15 minutes walk to the venue from the nearest stops (Google maps says ~1km walk - the 28 is the shortest walk). The Orbiter has stops on Riccarton Road near Riccarton Mall and along Whiteleigh Avenue, both areas with a fair number of motels. Route 28 goes along Cranford Street and Colombo Street, and through the CBD, and passes a few motels/hotels along the way. Route 145 is mentioned mostly for locals as there are no motels along its route, although there may be some holiday homes.
