Welcome to the 2018 South Island Championships! This event is a Class 1 event in the Poison Pawn Grand Prix in Association with D & D Financial Consultants Ltd.

The venue is the Canterbury Chess Trust room, Unit 9, 27 Tyne Street, Christchurch.

Tournament Information
The tournament is a FIDE and NZCF-rated event and is an 8 round Swiss, paired with the assistance of Vega. Time control is 90 minutes per player, per game, with a 30 second increment from move 1.

Tournament Timetable
Player registration is from 8:30am to 9:30am on the 30th of September. Players' meeting will be at 9:30am, with round 1 starting at 10am and round 2 at 3pm. Rounds will be at 9:30am and 3pm the other days. Prizegiving will be as soon as practical after the end of round 8 on the 3rd.

There is a guaranteed minimum prize fund of $800 made up of cash and book prizes. This will be increased if entries allow.

The highest-placed South Island NZ player (NZ resident or citizen registered with a South Island club) will be the South Island Champion and the highest-placed Canterbury resident will be the All Canterbury Champion. Prizes will be shared between players on the same number of points - tie-breaks will not be used. Players may not win more than one open or grade prize, but may win the All Canterbury Championship prize. NZ Master points are on offer - 10 points for 1st, 6 for 2nd, 3 for 3rd and 1 for 4th.

Entry Details
Entry fee is $90 ($80 for juniors/unwaged), or $120 to enter the South Island Championships and Rapid Championships ($100 for junior/unwaged), with entries limited to the first 32 entries. Additional entries will be placed on a waiting list, in the event of a withdrawal. Please note that all NZ players in NZCF-rated tournaments must be registered with the New Zealand Chess Federation, which can be done for $20. All are within about 10-15 minutes walking distance of the venue, although as noted, some are closer than others. Generally, any motel on Riccarton Road where the address is in the low numbers i.e. <100 will be within walking distance.
